For water utilities working toward emissions reduction targets, there is increasing interest in interventions that operate with low energy demand to deliver measurable emissions reductions under real operating conditions.
The two-year research project from 2023-2025 involved the installation of a floating wetlands system on a wastewater lagoon at Cowes Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Together with scientists from RMIT University and CSIRO, Westernport Water monitored the plants to evaluate their impact on nutrient removal and greenhouse gas reduction. The removal of emerging contaminants to the plant tissue was also investigated.
