Reimagining King Road Wastewater Treatment Plant together

Westernport Water is inviting the community to help shape an exciting vision for the future of the King Road Wastewater Treatment Plant as part of the King Road Recycled Water Wetlands Project.

A Concept Plan is being developed to explore how this unique site could support environmental, educational and low-impact recreational opportunities for generations to come.

Located in Corinella on King Road, just off the Bass Highway the wastewater treatment plant currently provides essential wastewater services to around 3,000 customers.

Operating continuously, and with increasing demand, it plays a vital role in protecting public health and the environment. Beyond its core function, the plant is also a working farm, provides habitat for wildlife and is part of a significant Bunurong cultural landscape.

One hundred per cent of the Class C recycled water produced onsite is reused to irrigate pasture and eucalyptus plantations. These plantations are harvested in partnership with Phillip Island Nature Parks to provide a sustainable food source for koalas.

The site supports a diverse range of native flora and fauna, including the federally listed Latham’s snipe (migratory shore bird), as well as significant vegetation such as remnant swamp scrub. For Bunurong Traditional Owners, the landscape has been a place of ceremony, sustenance and storytelling for thousands of years.

While public access has historically been limited due to operational and safety requirements, feedback from guided tours have highlighted strong community interest in experiencing the site more broadly.

Community members are encouraged to complete a short survey to share their ideas and go in the draw to win a $200 Westernport Water bill credit:  https://www.westernportwater.com.au/our-community/wetlandproject/

The community survey closes May 12, 2026.

This is a long-term opportunity to create something meaningful, supporting community wellbeing and environmental stewardship, while respecting the plant’s primary purpose and Bunurong cultural heritage.”

“Extensive engagement continues to be undertaken with Traditional Owners, as well as key stakeholders. The next step is to hear directly from the community.”
