Integrated wetland system planned to support wastewater treatment
Westernport Water is planning a significant infrastructure project at the King Road Wastewater Treatment Plant to ensure reliable and sustainable sewerage services for the Bass Coast for years to come.
This $6.46 million National Water Grid project is funded by the Australian Government (through its Water Infrastructure for Sustainable and Efficient Regions (WISER) initiative) and Victorian Government and delivered in partnership with Westernport Water.
Located on the traditional lands of the Bunurong People in Corinella, the 168-hectare site is more than a treatment plant. It also operates as a working farm and provides important habitat for native wildlife such as kangaroos and migratory birds.
Wastewater is treated to a Class C recycled water standard and reused on site to irrigate pasture, as well as eucalyptus plantations harvested by Phillip Island Nature Parks to feed koalas in their care.
The plant currently provides sewerage service to around 3,000 customers in waterline communities. The service area is projected to reach up to 8,000 customers by 2040 – more than double what it is today.
To support future growth, Westernport Water is planning for a new integrated treated wastewater wetland system. The constructed wetlands will refine the treated effluent to a higher quality by filtering through a series of progressively shallower wetlands, providing an opportunity for plants to take up nutrients. Subject to planning approvals, construction is expected to commence in late 2026.
In parallel, and with guidance from Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation, Westernport Water is identifying opportunities to protect and respect Bunurong cultural values across the landscape.
Future opportunities for limited public access for recreational and educational purposes are also being explored, recognising the positive benefits of connection to nature for community health and wellbeing.
Public access would be carefully managed, with wastewater treatment remaining the plant’s primary function. All activities will be subject to strict safety, operational and environmental requirements.
