What is Class A Recycled Water?
Class A is the highest quality of recycled water. It is strictly monitored to ensure it meets water quality standards in accordance with the guidelines set by the Department of Health and Human Services and the Environment Protection Authority (EPA).
It is suitable for a range of approved non-drinking uses, including garden watering, toilet flushing, car washing, irrigating parks and sporting fields, agricultural irrigation and stock watering.
Class A is currently produced at Westernport Water’s Cowes Recycled Water Treatment Plant, and it has been supplied to customers in and around Cowes through dedicated “purple pipes” for over 14 years.
Why use Class A Recycled Water?
Class A water is safe, high-quality and always in supply, regardless of climate or population factors. Recycled water is not subject to water restrictions and is cheaper for customers compared to drinking water. It also reduces the amount of treated effluent discharged to the ocean.
By using recycled water, we’re maintaining green open spaces, supporting local food production, enabling sustainable residential homes, enhancing regional tourism and strengthening environmental outcomes.
We are committed to achieving a baseline recycled water volume of 267 ML per year. Our plan to do this is set out in our Recycled Water Strategy 2023-26.
