Recycled water partnership making every drop count

Summary

A partnership between Bass Coast Shire Council and Westernport Water is putting class A recycled water to good use for dust suppression, road grading and street tree watering, making every drop count.

Bass Coast Shire Council is putting recycled water to work across the community for approved uses, including dust suppression, road grading and street tree watering.

Council are now accessing Class A recycled water from a dedicated fill point at the Cowes Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Recycled water is wastewater treated and disinfected to a safe standard for its intended purpose, providing a valuable alternative water source approved for a range of non-drinking uses.

For more than 14 years, recycled water has played an important role on Phillip Island in conserving drinking water and supporting environmental and economic outcomes.

Locally, Class A recycled water is used to water community gardens, a golf course, parks, and sporting fields, as well as for toilet flushing, car washing, agricultural irrigation, and stock watering.

Class A water is always in supply, regardless of climate or population factors and not subject to water restrictions.

By using Class A recycled water, we’re also reducing the amount of treated effluent discharged to the ocean while supporting our green spaces, local roads, agriculture and the places the community enjoys.
