Smoke testing of sewer pipes

Westernport Water plans to undertake a program of smoke testing its gravity sewer pipes in the Dalyston, Surf Beach and Sunset Strip areas commencing November 2014. Find out more…

Testing is aimed at locating breaks and defects in our sewer system and involves blowing a harmless smoke into the sewer manholes. The smoke will exit at vent stacks and any breaks in the sewer line.

The smoke you see coming from vent stacks on houses is non-toxic, non-staining, has no odour, is white to grey in colour and creates no fire hazard.

The smoke should not enter your home unless you have defective plumbing or dried-up drain traps. If the smoke does enter your home, evacuate the house and notify the works supervisor Noel Roulston on 0418 301 413, or call us on 1300 720 711.

The program of smoke testing is as follows:

  • Dalyston catchment area during the two weeks commencing Monday 10th November 2014 and ending Friday 21st November 2014.
  • Surf Beach catchment area during the two weeks commencing Monday 24th November 2014 and ending Friday 5th December 2014.
  • Sunset Strip catchment area during the week commencing Monday 8th December 2014.

IMPORTANT

If there is anyone in your home who has respiratory problems and is immobile, or if you have any concerns about this testing program, please notify us between the hours of 8:00am and 4:30pm on 1300 720 711.
