Water Conservation
Saving Water at Home
Westernport Water would like to help customers become water wise at home. The corporation has a number of brochures and other material available to help anyone wishing to reduce their water consumption.
The average Australian family uses about 1300 litres of water around the home - every day. The government is also giving rebates on water tanks and other water saving appliances within the home.
Some other handy hints may include:
- Replace your old shower head and toilet
- Reduce your shower time
- Install a grey water system that can divert water onto your garden
- Plant water resistant plants in your garden
- Mulch regularly - helps keep soil moist
- Use a pool cover on pools to save losing water through evaporation
- Don't leave taps running while waiting for hot water - capture the water and reuse else where
Check for water leaks
The simple way to check for water leaks is by reading the water meter at night, after the last use. Check the meter again in the morning before household use resumes. This will provide a gauge for comparison. If the reading has changed, and the meter is still ticking, you may have a leak somewhere that needs attention. Call your plumber!
These few hints will help you to conserve water and save dollars too.
WaterMAP launched for high-flow users
Major water users are required to improve their water efficiency through the implementation of their own water Management Action Plan (waterMAP).
Non-residential customers using 10 ML a year or more of drinking water at any one site from an urban supply will need to prepare a waterMAP.
Eligible customers include businesses, local council sites, hospitals, schools and primary industries using urban supplies, as well as community groups and commercially operated residential style properties classified as nonresidential under the Victorian Planning Provisions, using 10 ML a year or more.
Eligible customers are required to complete a waterMAP by 31 December 2007.
All waterMAPs must be submitted to the relevant local water corporation. Water Smart Gardens and Homes Rebate Scheme.

Be rewarded for buying and installing water smart products in your home
Since the launch of the Water Smart Gardens and Homes Rebate Scheme in January 2003 there has been an overwhelming response to take part and help save water. Over 145,000 rebates have been approved helping Victorians save over 1200 megalitres of drinking water a year.
The Government has committed over $10 million to the program to help Victorians to save some money and conserve future water resources.
Due to the success of the program and the continued need to protect our precious drinking water supplies for now and the future, the Victorian Government is providing new rebates.
From 1 January 2007, Victorians on a reticulated water supply are eligible for new rebates of up to $1000 on the purchase and installation of a large rainwater tank connected to your toilet and/or laundry and installed by a licensed plumber
