Overgrown trees to go at Wimbledon Heights basin

AGING pine trees at Wimbledon Heights will be removed by Westernport Water. Nearly 50 Monterey pines dating back more than 50 years are to be removed from May 19.

The trees could pose a risk to houses near the western boundary of the water corporation’s basin.
According to a specialist arborist report, the trees are now too old and too big to be so close to houses.
Under a landscaping plan developed by Bass Coast LandCare, the pines will be replaced with native replantings that will not cause similar problems, said Steven Porter, Westernport Water’s Manager – Asset Planning and Operations.
“Removing the pine trees will be a fairly large task,” he said. “Our objective will be to limit the amount of disturbance caused. We have notified nearby residents about the timing and extent of the work and seek their cooperation and patience while works are underway.”
