$4000 fine threat over $4 worth of stolen water

A Bass Coast man faces the possibility of $4000 fine and/or three month’s gaol for stealing $4 worth of water.

A Westernport Water staff member was notified by a concerned resident who had seen a hose connected to a Westernport Water outlet. A householder was found to be using a 120m hose to fill a domestic water feature from the outlet. It was estimated he had taken 3000 to 4000 litres. The water corporation is considering what action to take against the man. “The incident could constitute both water theft and contravening Stage Two restrictions,” said Westernport Water’s acting managing director Keith Gregory. “We thank the member of the public for notifying us. We also warn potential water thieves that they have a strong possibility of being caught out. “The fines are quite hefty. A first offence can result in a fine of around $4000, a second offence around $8000. “We hope this incident serves as a warning to anyone thinking they can steal public water and not be detected,” Mr Gregory said.
