Westernport Water head moves to Gippsland Water

Westernport Water’s managing director David Mawer has been appointed the new head of Gippsland Water.

Chair of Westernport Water Mrs Pam Cameron announced the appointment today, adding that customers had gained many benefits from Mr Mawer’s two-year tenure.

“David came to the corporation when supply was particularly vulnerable. Candowie levels were low, drought was pending and there was a need for strong leadership and far-sightedness,” she said.

“The benefits of his appointment to Westernport Water were immediate and wide-ranging. They have laid the groundwork for ongoing water security and future quality improvements.

“The board thanks him for his remarkable efforts and we know the staff appreciate the direction and support he provided.

“Customers of Westernport Water have a water supply of greater surety and quality thanks to David’s leadership. We wish him well in his new appointment.”

Mr Mawer came to Westernport Water after serving five years as NSW state manager for BHP Billiton Petroleum.

He said the greatest challenge he faced at Westernport Water was helping guide the corporation and its customer base through the drought.

“I am proud that due to the efforts of staff and customers - we all got through the most significant drought in recorded history, with such scarce water supplies,” he said.

“I feel confident that Westernport Water is now equipped to handle the challenges of the future. It has the staff and the structures to maintain ongoing service and improvements.

“It is a robust organisation with great capabilities and exciting prospects.”

He said his appointment as managing director of Gippsland Water would offer a new range of opportunities when he assumes the position in April. He replaces John Mitchell who left last year after 10 years heading one of Victoria’s largest regional water corporations with 230 employees and 130,000 customers.

Gippsland Water’s Chairperson, Richard McDowell welcomed Mr Mawer to the role. “We believe David’s water industry experience will lend to an easy leadership transition,” he said.

Mrs Cameron said preparations are underway to appoint a new managing director.
